So you want to buy a fabric mermaid tail?

Congratulations! I am so excited to welcome you to the world of mermaiding and amazing tails. There are a few different types, including fabric, silicone and hybrid tails, but fabric is great because it’s cheaper, lighter, and perfect for beginners.

I’ve compiled this list of fabric tailmakers – most of whom are well-regarded in the industry. But still, do your homework and be careful before you pay money to any company!

Feel free to ask as many questions, speak to as many people, find out as much as you can before you put any money down. Just because someone looks like they have a nice website and great Facebook pictures doesn’t mean they’re 100% authentic.

MerNetwork for example is a great place to start looking at authentic reviews and discussions. There are also a few mermaid Facebook groups, Discords and other websites.

So every mermaid tail has 2 parts – the fabric covering (usually called the tailskin) and the monofin (a swimfin which is attached to your feet).

The monofin is usually covered up, but it’s still important to have it, so that it gives the tail structure, and for you to swim underwater.

You may read more about monofins online and decide which one is most suited to you. Some are lighter, while some are heavier and require more learning to master swimming in it.

Again, safety first! YouTube videos are one way to learn the mermaiding technique and hear reviews, but nothing beats actually learning in a mermaid school or under a mer professional.

I have categorized the companies based on their location (because shipping can be pretty expensive!). I’ve also included details like sizing, pricing and monofins so hopefully it will be easier for you to look through and make a decision.

USA

FinFun

FinFun is, of course, one of the most popular fabric tailmakers! FinFun began in 2010 and is located in Idaho. Their colourful tails are made of 80% Polyester/20% Spandex.

/if you’ve seen that photo of Miley Cyrus, Jenna Dewan-Tatum or Ashley Graham rocking a tail or the Kardashians’ mermaid party – yup, those tails are from FinFun.

Finfolk

Photo Credit: Me! I purchased this Aqua Fairy Finfolk tail with my own money. 

Finfolk operates in Hawaii and began in 2012. They used to only make full platinum silicone tails but in 2017, they began selling fabric tails!

Their older tails (such as the one in the photo) are made of 1mm neoprene material. Their newer and current tails are made of 1mm, 4 way stretch scuba knit. All their tails come with a plastic vinyl insert to keep the shape of the tail.

Finfolk has also released the Discovery Tails in 2022, which do not require a vinyl insert.

Monofin:

Mermaid Linden* (Discovery tails)

Finfolk states that the tails fit ‘a variety of monofins’. The recommended monofins are Finis Shooter (adult size) and Finis Foil (adult size) and Mermaid Linden monofin. Certain tail designs may fit the Mertailor Fantasea Fin 3 monofin or Mahina monofin (I have seen them fit with my own eyes), however be advised that they may cause extra wear and tear.

Mertailor

If you’ve seen some Project Mermaid photos, there’s a good chance you might have seen a Mertailor tail, as Eric has worked with the Project Mermaids team. Britney Spears was also flipping her fins in a  Mertailor Eco Mermaid Tail for adults (no longer available).

Mertailor operates in Florida and began in 2003. Mertailor has a few different collections of fabric tails.

The Guppy tails line is available for kids and adults, and fit the Mermaid Linden Monofin by Body Glove. They are made of 72% Polyester / 28% Spandex blend. 

Both the Fantasea Fabric tails line and the Whimsy Fantasea tails line are for adults.

The Fantasea Fabric Tails are made of 72% Polyester / 28% Spandex Blend. There are ‘Full Tail’ designs and ‘Tail Slings’ designs, the latter feature an open bottom to showcase the monofin.

The Whimsy Fantasea Tails are made of 1mm polyester spandex nylon knit material with a spandex waistband. They fit the Mertailor Fantasea Fin One, Too, Three and Four monofins, depending on the design. Because the shape of all 4 monofins are different, each monofin can only fit the tail skin it is designed for.

You also have the option to custom-design your own Whimsy tail! There are currently 4 approved tail designers for you to work with to get a tail design and colour that you like. (Mertailor doesn’t allow you to submit a file of a tail design that’s designed by yourself.)

Sun Tails

Sun Tails operates in Idaho and began in 2015. They have pretty cool and colourful tails, including some interesting designs (right now there’s a Wonder Woman tail on sale).

The fabric tails are made from 80% Nylon / 20% Spandex material with 4 way stretch. Sun Tails also sells shark fins that can be strapped to a child’s back.

The 2 Tails

Seen some mermaid and mermen videos on Buzzfeed or Cosmopolitan? Then you’ve probably seen the mermaid tails from The 2 Tails.

The 2 Tails (sometimes written as The2Tails) operates in Los Angeles California and began in 2007. They have many different sparkly tails which fit children, teenagers and adults. They also have a selection of tails called Curvy Mermaid Tails to fit men or curvy women.

Their fabric tails are made of 4-way Nylon / Spandex stretch mix. The 2 Tails monofin is made out of recycled recycled plastic with a neoprene cover foot pockets and Velcro straps.

Tailz Mermaid Gear

Tailz Mermaid Gear operates in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and began in 2013. They have colourful fabric tails for men, women and children.

Because the zipper is located at the bottom of the tail, this means that you can zip open the bottom, take out the monofin and walk around in the tailskin – making the tails both swimmable and ‘walkable’. You have the option of adding ruffles to any of the tails if you like. The fabric tails are made of a Nylon Spandex blend.

Tailz Mermaid Gear also caters to Shark Boyz – a shark-coloured tail with a shark fin swimming cap for kids who prefer sharks. Again, these tails are also walkable but only come in kids sizes.

Splash Mermaid Tails 

Not to be confused with SplashTails in Australia, Splash Mermaid Tails operates in Utah and began in 2014. They have 2 types of fabric tails: Sparkle Mermaid Tails and Adorn Mermaid Tails.

Sparkle Mermaid Tails are simple shiny tails made of 80% Polyester / 20% Spandex blend. Adorn Mermaid Tails are similar but with fabric fins added to the sides or back.

The website doesn’t showcase any option to add your size, so I went to ask them. They say that they custom make each tail, so you can simply write down your measurements when you’re ordering a tail.

Grow A Tail

GrowATail operates in Fort Myers, Florida and began in 2012. The sparkly mermaid tails come in either one-coloured fabric or mermaid scale fabric. They are made of a Lycra / Spandex combination. You also have the option to add a ruffle at the back of the tail.

I contacted them about their monofin and this is their reply: “We make our own monofin and have been at it for 4 years! It is made of a plastic material.”

Miami Beach Mermaids (inactive)

Miami Beach Mermaids operates in Florida and began in 2013.

There are 3 different designs: the basic beginner tails, the ruffle fluke tails and the mermaid scales tails. The fabric tails are made of heavy 4 way stretch Nylon Spandex blend with a 1-inch knit elastic waist band. There is also an option to make a custom tail to fit a particular monofin if you prefer.

AquaMermaid was set up by Marielle Chartier Hénault. It operates in several cities including Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec, Kitchener and began in 2015. It also operates in the US (Phoenix Arizona and Chicago).

The fabric tails come in several colours and have a flower patterns , and fits children and adults. The tails are made of 4 way stretch Polyester. The monofin is recommended for people over 7 years old.

Vancouver Mermaid

Vancouver Mermaid was set up by Courtney Mermaid. It operates in Vancouver and began in 2011. However, at the moment Courtney only makes custom-made fabric tails and only takes orders via her website at certain times.

The fabric tails are made of thick Polyester / Spandex blend.

Planet Mermaid

Planet Mermaid operates in the UK and began in 2014. The tails are geared towards girls and boys aged 3 to 14. The fabric tails have pretty watercolour designs and are made of 82% Polyester / 18% Spandex blend.

Planet Mermaid also sells the Mahina Merfin but they do not sell tail skins that fit the Merfin.

Planet Mermaid also releases collections such as the Royal Koi collection, the MerPlanet collection and the Planet Shark collection.

URA Mermaid

URA Mermaid (you are a mermaid, geddit geddit?) operates in the UK and began in 2011. The fabric tails are colourful and sparkly, and can be custom-made.

For some tails, you can choose from 2 different fluke designs: one to fit the Olympic monofin and the other to fit the FINIS monofin. Some of the fabric tails are made of Polyester / Spandex blend, while others are made of Polyamide / Elastane blend.

Abyss Mermaid

Abyss Mermaid operates in France and began in 2016. They have cool and colourful tails, including Abyss Warrior tails and Japanese anime-inspired tails. Not surprising since the designs come from France and Japan.

The fabric tails are made of Spandex and Polyester blend. The monofin is recommended for people over 6 years old.

Les Nageoires d’Ondine operates in France and began in 2013. There are 3 different collections: Nageoire Nymphea, Nageoire Aquarius and Nageoire H20. Each one of these collections uses a different monofin. All the tails are made of Lycra. You can choose to add dorsal fins to the sides or back of the tail.

Delfina Mermaid

Delfina Mermaid operates in Finland (with an office in Russia) and began in 2008. The fabric tails are really bright and pretty, and have a nice 3D look to them. They also have pectoral, dorsal, hip, and ankle fins printed onto the fabric which gives it an extra cool effect.

The fabric tails are made of (I don’t know what they’re made of. I tried contacting the website, Facebook, and mers who own a tail but no one has given an answer. If you do know, please email or leave me a comment).

Magictail operates in Waldkirch, Germany and began in 2010. They have a standard line and a Premium line. The Premium line tails also include side dorsal fins. The fabric tails from both lines are made of 80% Polyamide, 20% Lycra blend.

If you like, you can create your own custom tail by downloading a tail template on their website, colouring in a design and sending it to them.

Mermaid Inc

Mermaid Inc was set up by Indonesian actress and host Marissa Nasution. It operates in Jakarta and Bali and began in 2015. They have several collections including the Atlantica collection, the SeaSiren collection, the SeaQueen collection and the newest SeaTitan collection.

Only the Atlantica collection fits both children and adults, while the other collections are catered to only adults. All their fabric tails are made of scuba stretch material. The SeaTitan tails also include a perspex fluke insert, which is a removable plastic fluke meant to keep the shape of the tail.

You can also create a custom mermaid tail from them.

Putri Siren operates in Bali and began in 2016. At the moment they offer 4 different mermaid tails -2 blue and 2 purple. The fabric tails are made of a Spandex / Polyester blend.

According to them, the tails are made locally in Indonesia: “We design and produce our own mermaid tails.”

Island Mermaids operates in Bali and began in 2014. The fabric tails come in 3 colours – Ariel Purple, Ariel Green and Ariel Blue. While their tails are mainly for women, you can email them to request for a child-sized tail. The tails are made of a Nylon / Spandex Blend.

I contacted them about their monofins, and this is their reply: “We make our own monofins in our factory in Bali. They are made from fiber and lycra. They are similar to Magictail monofins.”

The Philippine Mermaid Swimming Academy operates in Boracay, Manilla, Cebu and Davao, and began in 2012.

They sell the fabric tails from Mermaid Tail Factory (Germany). So if you like the tails from Mermaid Tail Factory and are in Asia- Pacific, this is one way to get them without the high shipping costs.

DreamBlue operates in Hurstville, NSW and began in 2015. The fabric tails are colourful scaled designs and are made of Polyester and Spandex blend.
