Who doesn’t love unicorn-shaped cakes?

Those mouthless colourful unicorns are perfect for birthdays, parties, celebrations, and any kind of gatherings!

Kids love them of course, but even adults are not immune.

Here’s what you need to make your very own unicorn cake:

  • Cake (size and number of layers of cake is up to you)
  • Buttercream frosting
  • Fondant to make unicorn horn and ears
  • Toothpick (or a satay stick if you’re making a large horn on a standard sized cake)
  • Food colouring
  • Paint brush
  • Sprinkles (optional)
  • Piping bag
  • Piping nozzle (you can have more than one depending on the designs)
  • Steady hands!

Cake

Each cake I made is a 2 layered cake. I baked the cakes in small ramekins and muffin trays to get small-sized cakes, and then stacked the layers before covering the cake with buttercream frosting.

What size cake you want is entirely up to you. Standard sized unicorn cakes are baked in 6-inch baking tins, but you can go larger or smaller. It’s up to you!

Unicorn Horn

For mini unicorn horns, I wrapped a string of fondant around a toothpick and painted it. A standard sized unicorn horn will require a satay stick.

Unicorn Ears

For ears, there are several different techniques. I chose the easy route of shaping triangles and just popping them on my unicorn cakes!

Unicorn Eyes

Most people just cut and shape fondant lines to become unicorn eyes. I tried creating large round eyes and eyelashes with black fondant, which worked quite well too.

Unicorn Hair

Unicorn hair is usually made of buttercream frosting and piped on the cake.

Different piping nozzles will give different shapes and sizes including rose and flower shapes. It’s a also a great space to experiment with colours. There are no wrong colours!

Unicorn Hair Accessories

This is the fun part, since it’s all up to your creativity! Add some sugar or fondant jewellery, sprinkle on hundreds or thousands, add silver dragees, use lustre dust, use your imagination!
